Engine of the Year 2014 in the BMW M235i M Performance meets multiple world champion Karl Maier on the speedway track
On the Monday morning after Germany had won the football World Cup final against Argentina, the Landshut/Ellermühle speedway stadium at the AC Landshut club witnessed one of sport’s more unusual match-ups. It was the first time a representative of a leading German car magazine took a BMW M235i with M Performance Parts onto the almost 400-metre-long track to compete in a drifting contest against BMW motorcycle dealer and four-times dirt-track world champion Karl Maier on a speedway bike. Therefore G-POWER is using the hidden potential of the BMW M6 Gran Coupé for a power output enhancement of awesome 150 hp and 210 Nm of torque. The G-POWER Bi-Tronik 5 V4 pushes the factory 560 hp/ 680 Nm to 710 hp/ 890 Nm.
The basis for the electronic output increase is the fact that G-POWER, in contrast to the manufacturer, does not use standard software full of compromises but an individual solution for the engine. Among others, the parameters for the amount of fuel and the ignition timing are modified depending on the increased boost level. In case of the G-POWER Bi-Tronik 5, these modifications are made by a micro-processor that is patched in before the standard BMW ECU. Of course all standard protection and diagnostic functions of the original BMW ECU stay untouched. During the engineering process of the latest generation of the successful Bi-TRONIK the G-POWER R&D department has transferred its experience from the area of supercharging to the turbocharged BMW engines. After all, the ASA supercharger used for the G-POWER supercharger systems is closely related to the turbochargers featured by BMW, since both units us a centrifugal compressor to build up boost. Back in 2013, BMW decided to celebrate the imminent demise of the E92 M3 with a couple of special edition models. Amongst them was one called the Lime Rock Park Edition. Only 200 were ever made and all of them were sent to the US. Could BMW do the same trick with the new M4?
One dealership sure wants us to think so. A BMW F82 M4 labeled ‘Limerock Special Edition’ was just spotted somewhere in the US. Judging by the plates and the Texas flag on the boot lid, we’d be tempted to say it was in Dallas, at the Plano’s Classic dealership but we’re yet to confirm that information. (more…)
The arrival of the new BMW M4 Convertible (fuel consumption combined: 9.1–8.7 l/100 km [31–32.5 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 213–203 g/km) sees BMW M GmbH making another alluring addition to its legendary high-performance sports car line-up. The new M4 Convertible replicates the performance figures of the new BMW M3 Sedan (fuel consumption combined: 8.8–8.3 l/100 km [32.1–34.0 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 204–194 g/km) and the new BMW M4 Coupe (fuel consumption combined: 8.8–8.3 l/100 km [32.1–34.0 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 204–194 g/km), but emphasises its stylish and distinctive appearance through its individual character and places the fascination of sporty and dynamic open-top driving at centre stage. The new model finds BMW M GmbH drawing inspiration from a long tradition: BMW’s high-performance sports car for track and road is entering its fifth generation in open-top form with this new chapter in its history headed “M4 Convertible”. More power and torque at less weight: REMUS has developed a sport exhaust system for the new BMW 2-series coupe M235i. The company’s sound experts coax not only the distinctive sonorous-aggressive roar typical for REMUS from the 3.0-liter BMW engine, but also extra power. The power increases from 318.4 to 331.5 hp, while the torque climbs from 441.3 to 460.2 Nm. At the same time, the system is more than 3 kg lighter.
With the two-part cat-back front silencer, a sport silencer as well as two tailpipe sets, REMUS provides a perfect-fit solution for the current top model in the F22 series (from construction year 2014). “New Wolf Inside”: This is the manufacturer’s marketing slogan for its new developments. The innovative sport exhaust systems feature all-round shot-blasted surfaces, and thrill with an even more aggressive sound plus lighter-weight construction. That is partly down to thinner, yet equally strong walls. The more aggressive sound is generated by a new internal design of the silencers. The fully shot-blasted surfaces made from stainless steel with aerodynamic optimized inner workings guarantee long life and consistent sound. (more…)
