In expectation of the new M5 with model code F10, we can look a little back to revise the old M5 E60. It has been 25 year since the first M5 was launched. The three generations – E28, E34 and E39 were sold in more than 35 000 units.
E28 M5 is powered by 3.5 liter straight-six engine with code S36B35. It develops 286 PS and catapults from 0 to 60 mph in 6.2 seconds and the top speed is 246 km/h (153 mph) .
The second generation is E34 M5, which has 3.6 liter straight-six with code S36B36, which delivers 315hp. Zero to 100 km/h are covered in 6.3 seconds and the top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h (155mph).
In 1991, the engine displacement was increased to 3.8 litres with the S38B38. The bigger engine develops 340 hp. The classic discipline 0-100 km/h is covered in 5.9 secs ad the top speed is 280 km/h (174 mph) – without electronic limiter.
The third generation is E39 M5, which is powered by a massive 4.9 liter V8 (code S62B49) with the staggering 400 hp. An astonishing acceleration – 5.3 seconds and the top speed is 301 km/h (187 mph).
The last M5 is E60 available in both sedan and touring versions. The engine is V10 S65B50 with 507 hp and 518 Nm. The enormous V10 engine revs to 8 250 rpm and a 100 horsepower per liter of displacement are pure race car territory.
The gearbox is seven-speed SMG with Drivelogic. There are eleven program options and the gear changes happen 20 percent faster with this latest generation SMG.
The car stands on 19″ wheel with performance tires. Both with the Variable M differential lock, the stability is guaranteed at every kind of speeds.
The DSC system in M5 E60 is designed to suit its performance. It also offers the choice of two driving dynamics programs. The first one allows DSC to function the way it always has. At the touch of a button, the M Dynamic Mode is engaged which lets DSC facilitate more aggressive driving.
Further the car is equipped with Electronic Damping Control, with three program modes -comfort, normal, sport. EDC adjusts the suspension at all times to suit the driving conditions.
The stopping power of is just amazing – from 62 mph (100 km/h) in under 120 feet and from 124 mph (200 km/h) in just under 460 feet.
M5 E60 continues to be one of the best sport saloons on the market, even though it is a little old, but it delivers amazing feels to the driver every time he or she sits behind the steering wheel.
