Look to the Frankfurt Motor Show this coming September to catch a glimpse of the new, revamped BMW 6 Series coupé and convertible – front-runners in the luxury two-seat coupé and sports convertible categories. Exterior modifications are both subtle and understated: the front is a bit more rounded, the xenon headlamps now come standard, and the rear section has been slightly modified. As for the interior, some of the controls have been refashioned; newer, more luxurious materials have been introduced; and there are fresh leather upholstery tones to choose from. All told, only confirmed BMW aficionados will be able to spot the difference between the old and new models.

Sporting top-of-the-range features, the new BMW 6 Series is the Munich-based firm’s technological showcase: it has Active Cruise Control with automatic brake application; Lane Departure Warning with a steering wheel vibration signal; Head-Up display; Night Vision system with an infrared camera; et al.

But the real innovation is, in fact, mechanical, since new engines are available for both the coupé and the convertible. While the 630i and 650i haven’t changed – they still offer 258 and 367 hp respectively – the illustrious manufacturer from Munich has decisively gone a step further: the 6 Series now disposes of a twin turbocharged Diesel 635d engine with a common rail fuel injection system featuring an output of 286 hp and 580 Nm of torque. With its six-speed automatic sports transmission with shift paddles on the steering wheel, this baby is born to run!

Like all of BMW’s new models, this year’s 6 Series has integrated their Efficient Dynamics technology, resulting in reduced fuel consumption and emissions. With their ‘many small streams do a great river make’ philosophy, BMW have made progress in a number of ways, including the lean-burning high-precision fuel injection, Brake Energy Regeneration, and automatic Stop&Go system.
